Canadian Student Admissions Process

Whether you’re a first-time student or a transfer student, our goal is to make the application process as clear and easy to navigate as possible. Admissions Steps for Canadian Students

Here鈥檚 a clear breakdown of each step in the international admissions process so you鈥檒l know exactly what to do and when.

Transcripts should come from a school representative to be considered official. First-year students coming directly from high school must provide official grades for all 4 years of high school to be considered for a Merit Award. 

If your transcript is not provided by the institution completely in English, transcripts must be officially translated or evaluated as part of the admissions requirements. The official document must include a cumulative grade point average (GPA) and a specific graduation date. Translations or evaluations must be directly provided by (1) a or member, or (2) the high/secondary school.

Students from Quebec-based and other french-speaking province institutions must be officially evaluated by a or member evaluation service.

What evaluation should I order?

What evaluation should I order?

Test Scores (optional) 鈥� We encourage you to consider providing these documents, as they provide insight into you as an applicant. The Admissions Office awards several scholarships, and these items can be used during the awarding process. SAT and ACT scores are optional but can be used to determine eligibility for our Merit Award.

All Canadian students are required to show proof of English language proficiency. There are several ways an international student can do this.

If you are from a Canadian province where English is considered the primary language, you will be considered proficient.  You will need to submit a copy of your passport as proof of residence.

If you are from Quebec or another primarily french-speaking province, you will need to demonstrate proficiency in English through testing.

  • TOEFL/TOEFL iBT minimum required score of 4 (as of January 21, 2026. Prior to that, a score of 79 was the minimum required). A score of 550 is required for paper-based tests.
  • TOEFL Essentials score of 8.5
  • IELTS score of 6.5
  • Pearson Test of English score of 53 
  • Duolingo English Test score of 105
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced

If you can meet either of these requirements below, you will also be considered proficient in English due to where you primarily received instruction.

  • Your high school transcript clearly states that English is the language of instruction for all subjects. If studying in a 13-year system, academic records for grades 10鈥�13 are required.
  • You have studied in-person at a regionally accredited higher education institution within the U.S., Canada, or England for two or more years and not in an ESL track.

If you wish to attend 91桃色 in a visa/status category other than F-1, you should confirm with your immigration advisor that your current status permits you to 1) study and 2) if in a program that contains off campus internship, clinicals, field experience, etc that you have legal authorization to participate in those forms of employment with your current status.

STEP 4: Admission Decision 

STEP 5: Confirm Your Spot by paying the tuition deposit 

Canadian students who want to study on campus will need to request an I-20.

91桃色 is unable to issue an I-20 to a student until they have full and unconditional admission into their program which means that you have:

  • Applied and were accepted into 91桃色
  • Paid your tuition deposit 
  • Submitted your final high school transcript 

Here are links to the forms that must be completed to issue the I-20:

– this form is the actual 1-20 request.

– this is where you will provide financial documentation.

Once fully completed 91桃色 will review and if everything is in order, issue the I-20.

Once the student receives the I-20 you will go to the border and have everything processed so that you can study in person at 91桃色. 

Upon acceptance, you will receive a letter from admission by email that includes your 91桃色 ID number and activation pin. Please follow the steps indicated on the letter to activate your Mainestreet Account. (Skip this step if you have already set up your account at another University of Maine System campus).

Once you receive your I-20, you need to visit the and pay your I-901 fee. Select the 鈥淧ay I-901 Fee.鈥� Please make sure you have access to a printer since you will need to print the I-901 receipt to take to your visa appointment (Step 11) or to cross at the US-Canada Border for the first time for Canadians. Note:

  • You will be prompted to enter our school code number which is:
    •  University of Maine at Presque Isle -POM214F00011000POM214
  • You will also be prompted to enter your SEVIS ID number which can be found in the top right section of your I-20 and begins with the letter 鈥淣鈥�.

STEP 9: Go to Border to Process Documents

STEP 10: Connect with Advisor to Enroll in Courses

If you plan to live on campus, you will submit a Room and Board Housing Contract. To apply for housing, please visit our Residence Life webpage. Here you will find several housing applications. Please select the one based on your start date. If you have trouble accessing the application, please email umpi-reslife@maine.edu to let them them know. Residence Life will hold a room for you and when you arrive in the US, you will be asked to complete the application at that time.

Due to state law, all degree seeking students attending in person must submit proof of immunization. For more information on immunization requirements and to learn how to submit proof of immunizations, please visit our Health Center webpage.
